Mullumimby is located 4km off the Pacific Highway, 798km north east of Sydney, 19km north-west of Byron Bay and 165km south of Brisbane. It is situated on the Brunswick River at 4 metres above sea level.
The town's name is derived from the Bundjalung people with 'muli' meaning 'hill'. The name of Mullumbimby is believed to mean 'small round hill', a reference to Mt Chincogan (309m), beneath which the town is situated.
Mullumbimby is the main service centre of the Brunswick Valley and has a variety of shops, cafes and traditional entertainment venues such as the local RSL and Golf Club.
Mullumbimby or Mullum as it is referred to by the locals, is a fairly traditional rural community with a foundation built on the industries of dairy, beef and wool and also banana plantations. However in the 1970's this sleepy rural community became a stomping ground for the hippies, or scratches, as the locals knew them. Mullum is now second only to Nimbin as the home of the alternative lifestyle. However the town now bears few signs of this lifestyle which invaded the town in the 1970's. There are no brightly coloured buildings as in Nimbin and Mullum is a town that has managed to integrate the traditional lifestyle with the alternative harmoniously.
